Politics have been an ingrained aspect in human life. Without politics there would be no structure or control in our world. As much as some people hate the idea of a controlling government we must realize that politics of any sort are absolutely necessary. Politics give a country a sense of organization. It also gives a country a feeling of aspiration, that with the help of a political system, they may be able to prosper and become one of the leading superpowers of the world.
Creating a political system in the United States has been much of a slippery slope. Many conflicts have resulted and many people have died for what we have to this day, but what we have is worth fighting for. In the beginning, the United States were not even a group of united territories. The territories within the boundaries of what we know now to be the United States used to be separate colonies owned by Britain, however, not operated by the British. The first of the American colonies that was founded in the Americas was known as Jamestown, which soon grew into the state of Virginia. Jamestown had made great amounts of profit on the growing and selling of tobacco. The colony of Virginia soon became very prosperous, causing more and more people to immigrate into the New World from Great Britain hoping to become accomplished and wealthy farmers.
Soon enough the colonies had become a great untapped resource under the British Empire. After many ridiculous taxes were put onto the colonies the Revolutionary War broke out. After the American victory a new government had to be established. To create a proper and formal government consent needed to be had by all of the major 13 colonies, it had to be unanimous. The first convention first created the Articles of Confederation, a document outlining the United States first form of a government. However, some viewed the Articles as crippling to a government. The government under the Articles was given too little power, not even enough to defend itself. These arguments over the Articles of Confederation lead to one of the very first division into political parties, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. The Federalists were for a revision of the Articles where as the Anti-Federalists were for keeping the Articles as is. In the end the Federalists won and were able to redraft the Articles of Confederation, but under a new name; thus the Constitution was born. Most people were skeptical about the constitution, but after fierce debate the Constitution was finally ratified in 1787. After the ratification of the constitution, our political parties became more and more diverse. After going through various parties that did not seem to last (Whig Party, Free-Soilers, Greenbacks) the American people finally found the two best parties suited for them; the Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans have been known to endorse a small central government and conservatism. The Republicans believe that the government should never intrude upon American business or the rights of the states themselves. Republicans trend to be older white men, Asians, or businessmen. The Democrats on the other hand support a bigger role of the government. The Democrats want the government to control things such as health care and border security because Democrats feel as if it is the government’s responsibility to take care of those. Democrats trend to be Blacks, Hispanics, Women, and in general people who have gone to an institute of higher education. Politics have come a long way since the mid 18th century. We have seen politics bring our country together or tear it apart; however, we all know that without politics we would be only a shell of a country.
